This three part book showcases Vidal Sassoon's life and career, from his adolescent years as anti-fascist street-fighter, to his pinnacle as a world-renowned stylist. I created this book in my level two typography class using images and information sourced from online resources. This exercise was the perfect entry into book design, as it allowed us to focus on the overall design, without having to worry about authorship. Even still, the content played a strong role in informing the book's design.
By melding the stylistic grittiness of works by Andy Warhol (a friend and endorser of Sassoon's products), with the typographic orderliness of the International style, my book's design is firmly rooted in Sassoon's 1960s heyday. The lo-fi, images that I enlarged on the photocopier not only speak to the Pop Art of the era, but also visually echo the revolutionary, avant-garde philosophies of Sassoon himself. These aesthetic choices also helped me to work around the issue of not having access to pristine, high-resolution imagery.
