In this book, I look at the process of racial integration in America, and focus on how baseball, of all things, led the way to a more integrated society. I wrote and designed the project as my final for Typography 3 class with David Asari. We were given a lot of latitude in how we wanted to present our work, and rather than settle for a poster or brochure, I chose to create a casebound book.
My solution aimed to harness the dignity of the form in order to lend credence to the already compelling story I was telling. While it was important to achieve this sense of authority, I did not want it to be overly imposing, so to keep this book appealing to a large age-range, I used a warm color palette, and large text to suggest the familiar, inviting sense of a children's book. This book also features a collection of sketches by Michelle Fleck. The gestural style of these sketches also play up the feel of a children's story book.
